As you know, both of our kiddos were diagnosed with autism. Although, most of the time they behave like typical toddlers. Sometimes we have to take extra steps so our boys understand what is going on.
One of the things I always try to do this time of year is the 12 books of Christmas! This does several things for our kiddos.
First, it allows our children to learn more about the holiday. We have several books about Christ and the nativity. A few books about giving and some about the traditions of Santa. Reading these books helps to prepare our boys for the traditions of the holiday like why we have presents, service and what the true meaning of Christmas is.
We also wrap up the 12 books and place them under the tree in their playroom. This gives them a safe space to practice unwrapping presents. Vincent (5) has sensory aversions both to sound and touch. Unwrapping gifts, although joyous for some is actually a difficult task for him. This gives him a chance to practice unwrapping gifts (and honestly let’s this mama know if we are wrapping or bagging presents this year). Maxwell (3) has a difficult time sitting long enough to unwrap presents, so this also gives us a chance to work on that goal prior to the big day.

Supplies
12 books- most of our books I found at thrift stores or this could be pretty pricey. And to save money they don’t even have to be Christmas! You could literally wrap up 12 books from around the house. The kids will think they are getting something new!

Wrapping paper- Mom tip (always stock up on the after Christmas sales for the next year!)

Tape- Costco has a great deal on tape this year
Tags- last year I literally took a sharpie to the wrapping paper and labeled them that way 🤷🏽♀️

What a great idea
