Teaching Letter Recognition- A Toddler Christmas

Early learners need to be able to recognize the difference between their upper and lower case letters. Check out our fun Christmas themed lesson!

To start out you will need:

-A box (large shoe box would work best)

-Wrapping paper

-Construction paper

-Laminating sheets

-Laminator

-26 Bows

-Letter stickers

-Velcro Dots

First, you will need to write out all 26 letters on construction paper in lowercase letters.

Laminating your sheets will help them last in the face of children.
Cut off the spare edges and add a Velcro dot to the back of each letter.

While your sheets are laminating throw your stickers on your bows.

Each bow needs an uppercase letter from your sticker sheet. Make sure to add a Velcro dot on the back of each bow.
Velcro dots are my best friend! Place the rough side on the box and the fuzzy side on the bow/letter card.

After your letters and bows are done you can get your box ready.

I just used an extra box we had lying around. A large shoe box would actually work better though! I cut a hole in the top so that we could slide in our upper/lowercase letters after we complete them.
Wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper for a more festive look!

Pick a letter card. In the example we chose the “j.” Make sure to lay out all of the bows in front of your child and have them choose the uppercase version of the letter shown.

Find the corresponding letter and then have them throw it in the hole in the top for easy storage!

We placed our box under the tree in the playroom. Let’s see if it’s a big hit tomorrow!
